Name Generator
Standard and unusual D&D-style races, ready in one click.
Choose your settings and hit generate.
What is the name generator?
The name generator creates fantasy names for characters and NPCs in D&D 5e. You choose a race, a gender and how many names you need — 1, 5, 10 or 20 at once — with or without last names. There are nine common races such as human, elf, dwarf and tiefling, eight unusual archetypes such as catfolk or living constructs with names invented for them, and Old German names in the style of Adalbert or Kunigunde. Every name has its own copy button, and the whole list can be copied as well.
How it works
- Choose a race — common, unusual or Old German.
- Set gender and count, and decide with “Include Last Name” whether you want surnames.
- Click “Generate Names”.
- Copy single names with the button next to them, or the whole list with “Copy”.
Frequently asked questions
Is the name generator free, and do I need an account?
It is free and works without an account or sign-in. You open the page and start rolling.
Are the names from official D&D books?
No. The unusual races are generic D&D-style archetypes with their own invented names, and the Old German names come from the Old High German and medieval stock of first names, with trade, place and nicknames as surnames.
Can I find earlier names again?
The last 20 results of each generator stay in your browser's local storage under “Recently generated” until you clear the history. Nothing is sent to an account. To keep a result elsewhere, “Copy” puts it on your clipboard as plain text.
Does the name generator work offline?
No. The results are rolled on the server from large tables that would be too heavy for the browser, so generating needs an internet connection.
