Random Encounter
A coherent encounter in one click — framing, mechanics, complications and hooks that all belong to the same scene.
Choose your settings and hit generate.
What is the random encounter generator?
The random encounter generator builds a coherent scene for D&D 5e, whether the party is travelling, in a city, in a village or in a dungeon. You set environment, likelihood, tone and complexity. You get an overview with category, risk and fitting checks, the encounter core, scene framing, mechanical effects if you want them, complications and plot hooks; a weird twist can be revealed on demand. Complexity decides how many lines each part gets. All parts belong to the same scene instead of being thrown together.
How it works
- Choose environment and likelihood — from “Likely” to “Very Unlikely”.
- Set tone (grounded, neutral, dark, weird) and complexity (simple, standard, complex).
- Leave “Include Mechanics” on if you want mechanical effects, then click “Generate Encounter”.
- Reveal the weird twist if needed; “Re-Roll” keeps the scene and refreshes its details.
Frequently asked questions
Is the encounter generator free, and do I need an account?
It is free and works without an account or sign-in. You open the page and start rolling.
Does the generator give me monster stat blocks?
No. It describes the scene, its risk, the checks and effects. For a fight, put the creatures into the Battle Tracker — it has the monster library and stat blocks.
Are my encounters saved?
The last 20 results of each generator stay in your browser's local storage under “Recently generated” until you clear the history. Nothing is sent to an account. To keep a result elsewhere, “Copy” puts it on your clipboard as plain text.
Does it work offline?
No. The results are rolled on the server from large tables that would be too heavy for the browser, so generating needs an internet connection.
