What is the character builder?
With the character builder you create a D&D character from level 1 to 20 under the 2024 rules of the SRD 5.2.1. You go page by page through species, class, background, ability scores, spells, equipment and finishing touches; the spell step only appears for spellcasting classes. Ability scores come from the standard array, point buy or dice. The page works out hit points, armour class and bonuses, and every field on the finished sheet stays yours to overwrite. The sheet prints as a PDF or goes straight into the Battle Tracker.
How it works
- Choose species, class and background.
- Set ability scores — standard array, point buy, “Roll 4d6 for me” or your own rolls — and assign the background bonus as +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1.
- Pick spells (casters only) and equipment, then add the details in the finishing step.
- Check the finished sheet, overwrite values where needed, then export it as a PDF or send it to the Battle Tracker.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to create a character?
No. Without an account your character is saved in this browser. With an account it moves into your account, is available on every device and can be shared by link.
Which rules and options are included?
The 2024 rules from the SRD 5.2.1 under CC-BY-4.0: twelve classes, nine species and four backgrounds.
Can I print the character sheet?
Yes. “Export as PDF” opens your browser's print dialog, where you print or save as PDF. The print sheet has a main page, features and equipment, a description page and — for casters — a spell page.
Is the character builder free?
Yes. Building, printing and saving in the browser cost nothing.
