Twice per day you can place an object no larger than 6 inches and no heavier than 1 pound in the ninth box and close all nine (an action). One hour later the object is not in the box. It is in the place where the person who owned it before you last kept it, if that place lies within 5 miles: in the drawer, the chest, the pocket of the coat on the peg, the tray in the pledge-house. You know the direction of it and the distance to the nearest half-mile, and nothing more.
If there is no such place within 5 miles, or if the object never had an owner before you, it is in the ninth box again at the next dawn, and the day's use is spent. The boxes will not send a living thing, and they will not send anything that is being held.
Nothing prevents the sending of an object into a locked room, a sealed strongroom, or the possession of a person who does not want it. The boxes have never yet failed to know who held a thing before, however the seller wrote the ticket.
