Out of lot 44. Twenty-two grounds, each laid over a face, and every face a former owner who did not survive owning it; and one more ground on top, laid after 1619, and dry. The red ink counted nineteen with a glass and counted correctly, and drew the wrong conclusion from it, and the right one is in the pencil: somebody is still painting.

Traits
Twenty-Two Faces. It is a skin of gesso, linen and paint, and it comes off the shield in one piece. Whenever it takes 10 or more damage from a single source, a ground lifts and a face is briefly legible under it; a creature that has seen a likeness of that owner recognises them. It has twenty-two grounds and a twenty-third that is not yet a face. It can pass through a gap a knife-blade wide without slowing.
Actions
Multiattack. It makes two Smother attacks, or one Smother attack and uses Lay a Ground.
Smother. Melee Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
Lay a Ground (Recharge 5–6). One creature within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 14 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save a ground is laid over its face. For 24 hours no creature that knows the target recognises it by sight, voice, or handwriting; papers naming it do not answer to it; no office of this city will accept it as itself, and it cannot prove otherwise. Divination magic short of a true seeing effect returns the ground and not the face. An hour's careful work with spirit, a soft cloth and a DC 15 check with artisan's tools lifts a ground early, and lifts one every time.
