Level 1 Divination ()
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a lens and a drop of sealing wax)
Duration: Instantaneous
You touch a document, seal, or inscription of no more than sixteen written pages and learn three things about it. First, whether the hand that wrote the body of it is the hand that signed and sealed it. Second, how many places in it were erased, added to, or written over after the sealing, and where those places lie, though not what stood there before. Third, the age of the ink and of the paper or vellum, each within five years.
The spell tells you nothing of whether what stands written is true, nothing of a cipher, and nothing of a tongue you cannot read. A document copied fair from a false original returns nothing to be found, however false it is, because there is nothing in it to find.
The spell tells a true impression from an impression made by a cast of the matrix that struck it (see lot 68). A seal made whole again by illusion (see lot 78) is reported as whole for as long as that illusion holds, and the parting beneath it is not shown.
The spell covers sixteen further pages for each spell slot level above 1, and may be cast at a range of 10 feet upon a document held open in your sight.
