Level 3 Divination ()
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a written label and a pin)
Duration: Instantaneous
You touch an object no larger than 10 feet in any dimension. You learn of the last three creatures that wanted to own it: the name each went by while it was theirs, the manner in which each came by it — purchase, gift, inheritance, pledge, seizure, theft, or not ascertained — and the place where it changed hands, named as the people there name it.
Only wanting is counted. A carrier, a porter, a servant sent to fetch, a thief hired by another, and an heir who sold within the month are none of the three. If fewer than three creatures have wanted the object, you learn how many there have been, and the rest of the answer is silence and not error.
A second casting upon the same object within 30 days tells you nothing you did not learn at the first. Upon an object that has stood in one collection and never left it, the working reports one hand three times, with three dates.
Cast upon a creature, the spell fails and the components are spent — unless that creature has been the subject of a bill of sale, a pledge, a seizure, or a lot number, in which case it does not fail.
You learn of one further creature that wanted the object, reaching further back, for each spell slot level above 3.
