Name a person, living or dead, by a name they answered to and by one true particular of them, and touch a thing that person has carried. You learn the day, the month, and the year of that person's true death, whether it is past or still to come.
The spell gives a day and nothing besides: never an hour, never a place, never a cause, never whether the day has been kept. Where the day it gives is not the day upon a certificate, a register, or a stone, the spell does not say so, and does not say which of them is wrong.
A person can be the subject of this spell once only, ever, by any caster. A second casting upon the same person gives no answer at all, and the caster who attempts it knows, without being told and without any check, that the answer has already been given, and to whom it was given.
At the moment of the answer the caster's own name is written once, legibly, in the caster's own hand, in a place the caster does not choose and is not shown. It is written upon something that keeps.
A day that is known may be paid in parts. He that knows his day is not held to spend it at once; he may spend a part and go on about his business, and the account stands open until the last part is paid.
Keep the instrument by you. Be not alone at the third.
