Spell

Weigh the Unseen

Level 2 Divination ()

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a weigher's brass check)
Duration: Instantaneous

You lay a hand upon a closed container of no more than 10 cubic feet — a chest, a cask, a case, a coffin, a wall-press — and learn its whole weight to within one ounce, the number of separate pieces within it, and the chief materials among them by their kind: metal, stone, glass, bone, wood, cloth, paper, liquid, living flesh, with the weight of each kind given apart.

You learn nothing of shape, colour, mark, or writing, and nothing of which piece is which. Powder, sand, and packing straw each return as one piece. Pieces resting one upon another and joined with pitch or solder are counted as one piece, which is how a dealer hides four things in the weight of three.

A living creature within the container is counted as flesh, and is counted as one.

What Is Not Counted

Lead defeats the spell. A lining or a case of lead returns its weight honestly and returns no count at all, and the working cannot be pressed for one.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot

The container may be 10 cubic feet larger for each spell slot level above 2.
