The Bril Spectacles

Wondrous item, uncommon

While you wear the spectacles you can read any handwriting you can see, however crabbed, abbreviated, faded, water-run, or written in a script you do not know. You read the letters and the words; you learn nothing of a tongue you do not speak beyond what the letters say. Ciphers, erasures made with a knife, and writing that was never in a hand remain closed to you.

Once per day, as an action, you can hold up a document and name the hand that wrote it. For 1 minute you see, pale upon the walls, tables, glass and floor of the room you stand in, everywhere that same hand has written in that room within the last 40 years, and you can read it. The marks show whether the paper survives or not. They do not show when, or in what order, and the room does not show a hand that wrote elsewhere and carried the paper in.

The lenses are of a long focus and were ground for an old man. Worn for more than an hour by anyone else, they bring on a headache behind the eyes that no rest shortens: you have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight for 1 hour after you take them off.
