The Widow's Loom

Wondrous item, rare

While the loom stands in a building where a creature has died within the last 30 days without the rites the place keeps for its dead, it works from dusk to dawn with no weaver at the bench. By morning there are 4 ells of plain linen on the cloth beam, worth 8 marks to any draper.

One mourning band may be cut from each night's weaving. While you wear such a band, for 8 hours, you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and nothing can make you forget or mistake the name of the dead person the cloth was woven for. A band cut second from the same cloth is cloth and nothing more.

Curse

The loom cannot be stopped while a creature in the building is in mourning. The shed may be tied, the cords cut, the shuttle carried out of the house and locked up; by dawn the cords are whole, the shuttle is in the race, and the cloth has grown.

Each night the warp is measured to the length of a shroud for whichever creature in the building grieves most, and the measure can be read off the beam in inches by anyone who knows the trade.
