Chapter 6

Spells

A spellcaster coaxes a luminous fungal bloom above his open hand.

Spells

We do not cast spells in the Deep. We ask the Weave a question, and sometimes it answers with fire, and sometimes with flowers.

— Sporefather Umble, Sporesung elder

Magic in the mycelial Deep is grown, not forged, and its spells share that green and patient character. The workings gathered here are the small liturgies of the Weave Below: rot called up out of the dark, light coaxed from a seed, memory read from a corpse or a curl of fungus, and the quiet spore-song by which the folk of the Deep speak mind to mind. A few reach even into the bond between a delver and the second self they carry, steadying it, feeding it, or soothing its slow hunger (see Chapter 5). The spells below are written for the 2024 rules and balanced to sit beside the spells of the Player's Handbook. Their material components are, more often than not, things you can forage: a burst puffball, a sprig of true-rest moss, a fistful of grave-loam. The Deep provides, if you know where to look.

Spell Lists

The spells in this chapter are added to the class spell lists shown below. A character learns or prepares them exactly as they would any other spell of the appropriate level, following the rules of their class. Where a spell appears on more than one list, each class draws on it independently.
